Mung beans, also known as green beans or green soybeans, are a nutrient-rich legume that is very versatile in the kitchen. Their mild flavor and pleasant texture make them an excellent choice for both savory and sweet dishes. In this guide, I will show you how to cook them simply and deliciously, so you can enjoy their benefits in any meal.
To prepare mung beans, you will need some basic ingredients. Here’s what you will need:
Before cooking, it is essential to wash the mung beans well. Place the beans in a colander and rinse them under cold water. This not only removes impurities but also helps eliminate dust and possible residues.
The next step is to soak the mung beans. If you have time, it is recommended to leave them in water for 4 to 8 hours. This process helps soften them and speeds up the cooking time. However, if you are short on time, you can also cook them directly, although the cooking time will be a bit longer.
Put the beans in the pot: Place the mung beans in a large pot.
Add water: Add water in a ratio of approximately 2:1 (water for each part of beans). For example, if you use one cup of beans, you should add two cups of water.
Cook on high heat: Bring the mixture to a boil. Once it starts boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low.
Simmer: Cook the beans for 30 to 40 minutes, or until they are tender. If you have soaked them beforehand, the cooking time may be shorter, approximately 20 to 25 minutes.
Add salt and seasonings: During the last minutes of cooking, add salt and any other seasonings you desire for flavor.
If you prefer a quicker way to cook mung beans, you can opt for a pressure cooker. This method significantly speeds up the cooking time.
Place the beans and add water: Just like in a regular pot, place the beans and water in the pressure cooker in a 2:1 ratio.
Cooking: Close the pressure cooker and cook on high pressure for approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
Release the pressure: After cooking, make sure to fully release the pressure before opening the pot.
Once the mung beans are cooked, you can incorporate them into numerous recipes. They are ideal for salads, stews, soups, or even as a side for rice. They can also be mashed to make purees or mixed with other ingredients in vegetarian burgers.
Mung beans are not only delicious, but they are also an excellent source of protein, fiber, and multiple vitamins and minerals. Prepare them and enjoy them as part of a balanced diet.
