Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions:

    Step 1
  • In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

  • In a separate bowl, heat the milk in the microwave until warm, then add it to the yeast mixture along with the egg and salt. Stir well.

  • Gradually add the flour and softened butter to the mixture. Knead the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic.

  • Cover the dough with a clean cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes, or until it doubles in size.

  • Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot or fryer to 350°F (175°C).

  • Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness. Cut it into 2-inch squares.

  • Carefully drop a few beignets at a time into the hot oil and fry until they turn golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.
