Pirozhki are savory Russian pastries that make for a delightful snack or appetizer. These soft, golden-brown buns are traditionally filled with a variety of ingredients, but we'll be making the classic meat-filled version. They're a warm and comforting treat loved by many.
In a bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 10 minutes until frothy.
Step 2
In another bowl, mix flour and salt. Add the frothy yeast mixture, egg, and vegetable oil. Knead until you have a smooth, elastic dough.
Step 3
Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for 30 minutes.
Step 4
While the dough is rising, prepare the filling. Sauté the chopped onion and ground beef until browned. Season with salt and pepper. Let it cool and mix in the chopped boiled eggs.
Step 5
Preheat your frying oil to 350°F (175°C).
Step 6
Divide the dough into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion into a small circle.
Step 7
Place a spoonful of the meat filling in the center of each circle, then fold it in half to create a semi-circle. Seal the edges tightly.
Step 8
Carefully place the pirozhki in the hot oil, and fry until they're golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side.
