How to Make Puto Maya and Sikwate

  • Wash glutinous rice and soak in water for 2 hours.

  • Drain the rice and mix it with coconut milk, water, sugar, and a pinch of salt.

  • Cut banana leaves into squares and briefly heat over an open flame to soften.

  • Spoon a portion of the rice mixture onto a banana leaf square and fold it into a packet.

  • Steam the packets for 30-35 minutes until the rice is cooked and sticky.

  • Serve warm.

  • Dissolve cocoa powder in hot water to make a thick chocolate paste.

  • In a pot, heat the remaining 1/2 cup of water and milk (if using) until hot but not boiling.

  • Mix the chocolate paste into the hot liquid and whisk until smooth.

  • Serve the hot chocolate alongside the Puto Maya for dipping.
