How to Make Puto Maya and Sikwate
Instructions
- Wash glutinous rice and soak in water for 2 hours.
- Drain the rice and mix it with coconut milk, water, sugar, and a pinch of salt.
- Cut banana leaves into squares and briefly heat over an open flame to soften.
- Spoon a portion of the rice mixture onto a banana leaf square and fold it into a packet.
- Steam the packets for 30-35 minutes until the rice is cooked and sticky.
- Serve warm.
- (Sikwate):
- Dissolve cocoa powder in hot water to make a thick chocolate paste.
- In a pot, heat the remaining 1/2 cup of water and milk (if using) until hot but not boiling.
- Mix the chocolate paste into the hot liquid and whisk until smooth.
- Serve the hot chocolate alongside the Puto Maya for dipping.
