How to Make Banh Mi
Instructions
- Prepare the meat or tofu by marinating it with soy sauce, minced garlic, and a dash of vegetable oil. Grill or pan-fry until cooked through and slightly caramelized. Slice into thin strips.
- Mix the rice vinegar with a pinch of salt and sugar in a small bowl. Add the julienned carrots and let them pickle for about 10-15 minutes, or until slightly softened.
- Cut the baguettes in half lengthwise, leaving a hinge on one side.
- If using pâté, spread it on one side of the baguette. Then, spread mayonnaise on the other side.
- Arrange the grilled meat or tofu slices on the pâté side of the baguette.
- Layer cucumber slices, pickled carrots, fresh cilantro leaves, and fresh mint leaves on top of the meat.
- Optionally, add thinly sliced chili peppers for some heat.
- Close the baguette and press it gently to compact the filling.
