How to Make Grandma's cake (without oven)
Instructions
- In a pot, heat the liter of milk and infuse together with the cinnamon stick and the lemon peel. We bring it to a boil. Remove the pot from the heat and pour a small amount of milk into a saucepan to pour the sugar and dissolve it. Add the cornstarch, mixing it very well without forming lumps and, finally, the egg yolks. Whisk the whole mixture vigorously.
- Strain the rest of the milk that was left in the pot to remove the skin from the lemon and cinnamon, add the mixture from the saucepan where we had mixed the egg yolks and the cornstarch and bring it back to medium heat until it thickens without stopping moving constantly so that it doesn't stick. When it reaches the desired consistency, remove it from the heat, put transparent film on top of it trying to touch the entire surface of the pastry cream and reserve it.
- Now we're going to set it up. In the bowl we have chosen, we are going to put layers of cookies and pastry cream. The first will be cookies, so we are soaking them one by one in the milk that we had left aside to soak them and place them on the bottom of the tray. When we have it covered, we put a layer of pastry cream, then another layer of cookies soaked in milk and so on until we finish the ingredients or reach the edge of the tray, whichever happens first.
- The ideal is to finish with a layer of cookies. We booked it.
- Now it's the turn of the ganache that will cover the cake. Put a saucepan on the fire and pour in the cream and chocolate so that it melts. There will come a time when, with the residual heat of the cream, the chocolate will melt without having to be on the fire, so we remove the saucepan from the vitro (or stove) and continue stirring so that the chocolate dissolves.
- When we have achieved this, we add the butter and also melt it in the same way without having to bring the saucepan to the fire again. Pour the ganache over the cake and let it rest in the fridge for at least 2 hours... and that's it! You'll see that it's a real treat.
- It is a cake that allows many adaptations depending on the consumer's taste, such as putting a little seasonal fruit, or jam between layer and layer; or making it from chocolate mousse instead of custard; or soaking the cookies in coffee, or liqueur, or whatever you want. Of all the combinations that I have told you, it is very delicious and, best of all, it does not require an oven.
