How to Make Bobotie
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
- In a small bowl, soak the bread slices in 1 cup of milk until they are soft. Squeeze out the excess milk and mash the bread with a fork.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté until the onion is soft and translucent.
- Add the ground meat to the skillet and cook until it's browned and cooked through, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks.
- Stir in the curry powder, turmeric, coriander, cumin, raisins, apricot jam, and chutney. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Mix well and let it simmer for a few minutes.
- Transfer the meat mixture to a baking dish and spread it evenly.
- In a separate bowl, beat the eggs with 1/2 cup of milk until well combined. Pour this mixture over the meat in the baking dish.
- Bake the bobotie in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes, or until the topping is set and golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.
- Serve the bobotie with rice, chutney, and a side of sliced banana. Enjoy your South African meal!
