How to Make Black Forest Cake
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, sift together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined.
- Gradually add hot water and mix until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin; this is normal.
- Divide the batter equally between the prepared cake pans.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove them from the pans and let them cool completely on a wire rack.
- While the cakes cool, prepare the whipped cream. In a chilled mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream until it begins to thicken. Add powdered sugar and vanilla extract, then continue to whip until stiff peaks form.
- Once the cakes are completely cool, slice each cake horizontally to create a total of four layers.
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of whipped cream over it and add a portion of the drained cherries.
- Repeat this process with the remaining layers.
- Frost the top and sides of the cake with whipped cream.
- Decorate the cake with chocolate shavings and maraschino cherries.
- Refrigerate the cake for at least 2 hours before serving.
- Slice, serve, and enjoy your homemade Black Forest Cake!
